Best News: Who Will Win The Masters? Without Tiger, It's Anyone's Guess

AUGUSTA, Ga. (CBSNewYork/AP) - If you're looking for someone not to pick at this year's Masters, go with Ryan Moore.

By winning the Par 3 tournament, he surely sealed his fate. After all, no one has ever taken the just-for-fun prelude Wednesday and gone on to collect a green jacket Sunday evening.

Then again, if there was ever a year to break with tradition, this might be it.

Tiger Woods is on the sidelines. A bunch of brash Augusta rookies are eager to fill his shoes. And the last two dozen majors have been divvied up among 21 winners.

Good luck making sense of it all with the Masters beginning Thursday. LIGUORI: WILL ROOKIES STEAL THE SPOTLIGHT?

"You never know," Moore said, savoring his two-stroke victory on the picturesque nine-hole course tucked away in a corner of Augusta National.

"Someone has got to break that (Par 3) curse at some point in time, so hopefully it's me. Who knows? I might go shoot 8 under or something, make a couple of hole-in-ones."

As unlikely as that sounds, pretty much everything else is up for grabs at this Masters. Recovering from back surgery, Woods is sitting out the opening major of the year for the first time since turning pro.

Even as his dominance waned in recent years, he was always the clear-cut favorite coming into Augusta, where he has won four times.

Now, as Moore said, who knows?

Jason Day, Sergio Garcia and former Masters champion Zach Johnson are the only players from the top 10 who have won anywhere in the world this year. Only one of the past seven winners on the PGA Tour was ranked in the top 75.

"I think if you're outside the top 50 in the world this week, you've got a great chance," U.S. Open champion Justin Rose said with a laugh.

Woods is out of golf until the summer, but the show goes on at a tournament that rarely fails to deliver plenty of drama.

"We miss Tiger, as does the entire golf world," Masters chairman Billy Payne said. "Nevertheless, this is the Masters. This is what we hope is the best tournament in the world, one of the greatest sporting events. And I think we will have a very impressive audience and have another great champion to crown this year."

That could be Phil Mickelson, who last year won the British Open at age 42 and now has a chance to join Woods and Arnold Palmer with a fourth green jacket.

It could be Adam Scott, trying to take over as the world's No. 1 player and join Woods, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus as the only back-to-back winners.

While Woods last won a green jacket in 2005, he had finished out of the top six only once since then.

That's what made him such a compelling figure at Augusta.

He always seemed to be there.

"It's a huge loss," Scott said. "But, as every year here, this event produces something special no matter what. It just has a way of doing it. It's not going to involve Tiger this year, but it will involve someone else and it will be a memorable event anyway."

Rose falls on the side of experience - knowing where to miss, knowing where you can't afford to miss, where the hole locations tend to be on the contoured greens and using the slope to get the ball close.

"Always you can have the unknowns," he said. "But I would say 15 guys are pretty strong favorites."

Fuzzy Zoeller was the last Augusta rookie to claim the green jacket in 1979, and the only other ones to do it were the first two: Horton Smith and Gene Sarazen.

Then again, there are 24 first-timers in the 98-player field, a record (except for the first tournament), and none of them will concede an insurmountable learning curve.

Besides, no one is dominating golf at the moment. Jimmy Walker has the most PGA Tour wins (three) this season, but this is his first Masters. Scott had a chance to go to No. 1 three weeks ago at Bay Hill, but he lost a three-shot lead in the final round to Matt Every, who had never won in his career.

"Doesn't matter if you've played here once or if you've played here 50 times," said Patrick Reed, who has won three times in the past eight months. "When it comes down to it, it's just going to be that whoever is playing the best is going to walk away with the trophy."

Who knows? Maybe it will be Moore.

He's certainly not fretting over a supposed curse.

"I'm not afraid of it," he said. You May Also Be Interested In These Stories

Best News: Lacey Holsworth, inspiration for Michigan State star, dies of cancer

Michael Conroy/AP

Princess Lacey, whose unlikely bond with a college basketball star became a national story, died on Wednesday, her family announced.

Lacey Holsworth, the 8-year-old cancer patient, became close friends with Michigan State's Adreian Payne after a hospital visit by the Spartans star two years ago.

"Princess Lacey has achieved the ultimate victory," her parents wrote on the missprincesslacey Instagram account. "She now dances among angels.... The world is a better place because you were in it. Our hearts are broken. We love you Doll. Dance all night... Mommy and Daddy, Will, Mitchell, and Luke #LoveLikeLacey"

Holsworth, who had a fetal-nerve cell cancer, became a fixture around the Michigan State program. She joined Payne on the court during Senior Night festivities at the Breslin Center in East Lansing and then helped the team cut down the nets after the Spartans won the Big Ten tournament title.

After making the trip to Manhattan for the East Regional final at Madison Square Garden, where Michigan State was eliminated by eventual national champion UConn, she joined Payne in Dallas for the College Slam Dunk Championship as part of the Final Four weekend.

"She is such a huge part of my life," Payne recently told the Detroit News. "And she grew to be part of my family."

Lacey's cancer was in remission last spring when the two attended a cancer fundraiser held by ESPN analyst Dick Vitale. The cancer returned in the fall. Vitale, who has pledged to raise money in her honor, said on Twitter "We WILL NOT let her pass in vain ! RIP #ANGELLACEY"

"Wow i dont even wanna believe it @adorablelacey 's family is in my prayers," wrote Payne's teammate Gary Harris on his Twitter account. "I know she will be watching over us all #RIPLACEY."

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo said Lacey will have a lasting impact in a phone interview with USAToday.

"I'm supposed to be a guy who leads men, and now an 8-year-old has impacted my life like this. ... the impact on all of us will be lasting, and that's especially true for Adreian (Payne)."

Izzo said he spoke with Payne early Wednesday morning, the newspaper reported.

"Even though he knew this was inevitable, it's hard," Izzo said.

Best News: Champions League: Atletico stifles Barcelona, Bayern survives Man Utd

For a moment, it appeared as if Bayern Munich could actually be on its way out of the Champions League in the quarterfinal stage. Patrice Evra's goal had Manchester United shockingly ahead of the reigning European and German champions. But an immediate answer by Pep Guardiola's side kept Bayern's hope at a Champions League repeat alive and well, as Bayern eliminated David Moyes' Manchester United on a 4-2 aggregate after a 3-1 triumph.

Guardiola's former team, Barcelona, was not as fortunate, as Atletico Madrid's furious pressure at the beginning and sound defending throughout stifled its Spanish rival. Lionel Messi and Neymar were held at bay, and Koke's goal held up as Diego Simeone's side -- without the injured Diego Costa -- advanced with a 1-0 victory (2-1 aggregate). As a result, the Champions League semifinals include Bayern, Atletico, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Here is what caught our eye from Wednesday's second legs:

Player of the Day: Diego Godin, Atletico Madrid

With six minutes to go, Godin, charging forward, was fouled by Marc Bartra just inside his own half. It didn't seem appropriate to ask just what the Uruguayan center back thought he was doing there, leading a break rather than protecting his own goal, but it did seem to sum up Atletico's attitude. Although it was nervous towards the end, far more nervous than it should have been given how many chances Atletico wasted in the first half, it never felt like it was under siege.

There were plenty of fine performances from Atletico players - Koke, Juanfran, Tiago, Gabi and Raul Garcia were all superb, and in the day's other game Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Antonio Valencia and Chris Smalling all had fine nights - but it was Godin, the image of controlled defiance, whose performance summed up the night.

Moment of the Day: Patrice Evra's goal and Mario Mandzukic's immediate response

Manchester United's moment of hope lasted all of 73 seconds. First Patrice Evra blasted Manchester United into the lead with a sensational first-time strike from outside the box, a genuinely brilliant goal and one that came without warning. For 50 seconds United celebrated and dared to think the impossible.

Then Bayern kicked off again and five passes later, Ribery crossed, Evra let Mario Mandzukic steal in front of him and the Croatian headed an equalizer, a sign of Bayern's resilience as much as its ability.

From then on the momentum was with the European champions. Although Wayne Rooney hesitated fatefully in front of goal for the second time of the evening with the score at 1-1, it felt as though United's only hope was to cling on for penalties. That disappeared once Thomas Muller had turned to squeeze in Robben's low cross, and when Robben added a third after a familiar diagonal scamper, the game was won.

Major Takeaway of the Day

There were times when Bayern Munch seemed to be playing with a back two, with Philipp Lahm and David Alaba pushed high and narrow, flanking Toni Kroos at the back of midfield to leave just Dante and Jerome Boateng at the back. Guardiola has shown before, both at Barcelona and at Bayern, that against sides he expects will back men behind the ball he is quite happy to shift his players into unorthodox positions high up the pitch.

The drawback can be a decrease in verticality; that the more players there are high up the pitch the fewer players there are to break at pace from deep to add thrust. Barcelona also seemed to play with fewer than the expected number of defenders, although that was less by design than as a consequence of their extraordinary discomfort under the high ball. Again and again in the first half Atletico troubled them with direct play and crosses.

The lesson was clear, both by comparison with Guardiola's time and Guardiola's Bayern: You can get away with reducing the number of defenders only if the rest of the side is good enough, both in terms of possession and position, to allow it.

Assessing The Final Four

Atletico is dogged and tough, the bristling, pragmatic embodiment of its manager, Simeone. It is supremely compact, happy to defend deep or to press, a superbly drilled tactical unit. It also has in Diego Costa arguably the in-form forward in Europe at the moment - although he missed out through injury against Barcelona. The question all season has been whether its relatively small squad can sustain its intense style all season.

Bayern, the reigning European champion, is magnificent in possession and has in Guardiola a coach who seems to see the game on another level to his rivals, forever micromanaging, making changes to exploit weaknesses or protect flaws nobody else has even noticed. His critics say he over-complicates things and that the high line he prefers leaves Bayern susceptible to pace, but if only two defeats in all competitions all season - both in dead rubbers - is the sort of vulnerability most teams dream of.

Chelsea is short of a striker and with Nemanja Matic cup-tied can lack drive in midfield, but in Jose Mourinho it has the best manager in the world at one-off games. John Terry revealed on Tuesday that Mourinho had prepared his side for a variety of different scenarios against PSG: 1-0, 2-1, 3-1. It's hard to imagine any other coach being so meticulous. Whether Chelsea has the best defense left in the competition is arguable, but it is certainly the team best equipped to sit deep and spring forward with rapid counter-attacks.

Real Madrid has awesome forward power: Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale and technically gifted, quick, powerful and direct on the flanks, and Karim Benzema has found a way of offering a focal point without obstructing either. The problem is at the back, where weaknesses were shown up both in the Clasico and by Borussia Dortmund. It is vulnerable to pace, particularly when attacked in wide areas.

Best News: Kate Middleton As Mom To Prince George: It's Fantastic That You're So Hands-On

Kate Middleton, how adorable and natural are you, Prince George and Prince William on your family's first official royal tour together in New Zealand?

Kate Middleton - it was so refreshing to see you actually get right down on the floor to play with Prince George at the little heir's first official engagement, attending a play group with other babies. Kate Middleton As Mom To Prince George: It's Fantastic That You're So Hands-On

Kate Middleton, you are totally following in the footsteps of Prince William's beloved mother, Princess Diana, who was the very first royal mom to actually have a hands-on relationship with her children.

She was married to William's dad, Prince Charles, whose own mother, Queen Elizabeth, was strictly hands-off - she was more queen than actual loving mum.

Now, Princess Diana must be smiling in heaven to see how her son's choice of wife reflects her own philosophy of child-rearing - to be as affectionate and loving as possible.

Take Our Poll

Both you and William looked like everyday parents as you held, cuddled, and played with little George and chatted with other parents at the New Zealand play date. You could barely keep your eyes off Prince George, and it's clear that you are as loving with your little son as any mother - royal or not - could be. Kate Middleton - It's Wonderful That You Take After Princess Diana

You looked completely natural holding George and shifting him from hip to hip as he grew heavy - he certainly is a robustly healthy little guy!

And little baby George is obviously used to being in his mother's arms. Not only did he gaze up at you happily, but he also good-naturedly touched your face, played with your hair, and then grabbed a strand and put it in his mouth and started to chew.

Hey, that's what babies do! And despite George's blue-blood background, he is, after all, just a baby.

You and Prince William seemed completely comfortable meeting with the 10 other sets of parents for the play date organized by the New Zealand government.

You all swapped tales of sleepless nights, changing diapers, being on bottle duty, and coping with all of the various surprises of new parenthood.

George enjoyed himself, shaking toys, putting them in his mouth, grabbing for toys from other babies, and then dropping everything on the floor. In other words, George did what came naturally, and so did his parents.

Both you and Prince William have made it clear that you will be raising your children as primary caregivers, and while your nanny, Maria Borrallo, has come along for the New Zealand trip, she's certainly in the background.

When Prince William learned how to put George's car seat in his own car and drove the family home from the hospital, he was making an important statement about wanting to be an involved dad. And now it's clear at the play date that that's exactly what is happening. You and William are equal partners in raising Prince George, and it is so refreshing to see the future king and queen make their son's everyday well-being a top priority.

So HollywoodLifers, do you agree that it's wonderful that Kate is such a hands-on mum? Let me know. - Bonnie Fuller More Royal Family News:

Best News: The prince, the play date and a small incident of theft

Wellington, New Zealand (CNN) -- Taking your baby along to a new playgroup can be nerve-wracking.

You don't want any fuss, you just want to blend in. You hope and pray that your kid isn't the one who screams, hits or breaks something.

All you want is to slip in, sit down and be told how beautiful and well-behaved your little one is.

Prince George was put to the test Wednesday at a specially convened play group in Government House, Wellington, New Zealand.

The 8-month-old was never going to just slip in, because he had brought the world's media with him, but he didn't scream, hit or break anything ... just one incident of theft.

Amelia Howe was playing with a plastic block. George grabbed it, Amelia screamed, and Mr. and Mrs. Howe apologized to the Duchess of Cambridge.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, holds her son, Prince George, at a specially convened play group at Government House in Wellington, New Zealand, on Wednesday, April 9. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are on a tour of New Zealand and Australia with the 8-month-old prince.

Prince George's royal duties have begun

Prince George's first royal tour

They later explained that Amelia had hurt herself by biting down too hard on the toy.

"This one was chewing on a toy, and she's teething, so she bit it, and it obviously hurt her. She dropped it, and the toy got flogged, and that was the end of it," her father said.

There were no hard feelings, and the Howes are hoping Amelia will stay in touch with her new British playmate. A royal wedding in 30 years' time?

The event was organized by the parental support group, Plunket, and a diverse group of families was invited, including a single mom and gay couple.

All the 10 babies attending were born within a few weeks of Prince George. He was the biggest: "quite a bruiser," said one onlooker.

Parent Jared Mullen said the Duke and Duchess were "lovely first-time parents."

"In many ways, they're in the same boat as all of us who are trying to get used to it, and it was just very nice to have a relaxed time," he said, describing young George as "very intrepid."

The playgroup was Prince George's main event in New Zealand.

We don't expect to see him at another engagement until the tour moves on to Australia.

This event was typically informal for William and Kate, who swapped parental anecdotes (George is finally sleeping through the night, apparently).

It may have felt like a regular playgroup, but of course, it wasn't.

Who knows what most of them will do when they grow up. The world is their oyster.

One of them, though, has had his whole life mapped out for him. George is destined to be their king. He hasn't got a clue about that yet, of course.

In fact, it's the only time in his life that he will feel normal. For George, it was just a play date.

Best News: Champions League: Barcelona dumped out by Atletico, Bayern beats Man U

(CNN) -- Every year there is talk of how the Champions League trophy will find itself lured back to Madrid for "La Decima" -- or the tenth as Real Madrid refers to it.

That could very well be the case this season -- but perhaps it will reside at Vicente Calderon for the very first time and in the hands of Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid.

On Wednesday, his side produced a fine display to clinch its place in the semifinals of the Champions League and in doing so ended Barcelona's hopes in the competition.

An early goal by talented playmaker Koke ensured Atletico recorded a 1-0 victory -- a result which gave the home side a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Atletico, which was held to a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou in the first leg, should have had the game wrapped up by the interval after hitting the woodwork three times in the opening 20 minutes.

Despite missing top scorer Diego Costa through injury, Atletico continued to look the more dangerous.

Midfielder Gabi then missed a glorious opportunity in the second half to kill off any hopes of a Barcelona comeback but failed to score when in on goal.

Barcelona's best opportunity came through midfielder Xavi but he failed to convert a rare chance in front of goal.

While Barcelona has won the competition four times, Atletico has never managed to claim Europe's biggest prize -- losing out in its only appearance in the final to Bayern Munich in 1974.

Now it has the opportunity to win not just La Liga, where it sits top with six games to go, but also the Champions League.

"It was a very important goal because it got us through to the semi-finals," Koke told Spanish broadcaster Canal Plus.

"The work of the team across both legs has been spectacular.

"We ran a huge amount, we played the two games in the way we wanted and I think we were the clear winners.

"With these fans behind us it is very hard for us to lose a match here."

Barcelona, which faces Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final on April 16, failed to impress despite the presence of Lionel Messi and Neymar in attack.

Tata Martino's side will now switch its focus to the league title race with Real and Atletico also in contention.

"We had the game within our grasp," Barca midfielder Xavi said. "We had four or five very clear chances that normally we would put away.

"They made the most of those first 15 to 20 minutes when they played with a lot of intensity and scored the goal," Xavi told Canal Plus.

"I think after that we stepped up to the challenge and deserved at least a draw.

"I think we played two good games and had our chances in both legs but it slipped through our fingers.

"We can only congratulate all the Atletico fans."

The two teams will meet again on the final day of the league season at Camp Nou -- a match which could be spectacular if this fixture is anything to go by. Bayern cruise

In the night's other game, Bayern Munich survived a scare against Manchester United to book its place in the semifinals.

The defending champion overcame its English opposition 3-1 on the night, 4-2 on aggregate following an entertaining second half.

Patrice Evra's fierce effort gave United a shock lead after 57 minutes but goals from Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben sealed the win.

There were few who gave United any chance whatsoever of making it through to the semifinals of the competition given its horrendous season in the Premier League.

Last season, under Alex Ferguson, United won the league title by 11 points -- this year it sits seventh and faces a struggle to even claim a place in the Europa League.

Thrashed at home by rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, United performed admirably to record a 1-1 draw in the first leg against a rampant Bayern side.

The German giant swept all before it last season -- winning the domestic double as well as the Champions League under Jupp Heynckes.

Pep Guardiola, who won the competition with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, has already wrapped up the league title after his side stormed past its rivals.

Its first defeat in 54 league games came against Augsburg on Saturday -- although Guardiola had taken the opportunity to rest players ahead of the United game.

Bayern, without suspended duo of Bastian Schewinsteiger and Javi Martinez, enjoyed plenty of possession in the opening 45 minutes but failed to make any clear cut chances.

Winger Robben flashed an effort wide of the post, while United's best effort was ruled out for offside after Antonio Valencia had netted from close-range.

While the first half may have been a rather dour affair, the second was a rollercoaster of emotion as both sides began throwing men forward in search of victory.

And it was United which struck first with 57 minutes played when Evra fired home an unstoppable effort from 20-yards into the top corner of Manuel Neuer's goal.

That strike was wildy celebrated by players on the visiting bench but before they could even sit down, Bayern was level thanks to a fine header by Mandzukic.

Buoyed by the equalizer, Bayern bean to scent victory and Muller tapped home a second after beating Nemanja Vidic to Robben's cross.

Robben added a third after leading the United defense a merry dance to round off the scoring and book Bayern's place in the semifinal for the third time in four years.

"They scored the first goal so it was a tricky tie but in the end 3-1 was a very good result," the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

"It was important to score straight after they made it 1-0. It was a wake-up call because the first 10 minutes in the second half were a disaster - we were slow and were not there.

"You can't do that in the Champions League. After that we scored three goals. We wanted to attack and they were playing on the counter so you have to be careful."

The defeat means United will not compete in Europe's top competition next season and heaps more pressure on manager David Moyes.

Midfielder Michael Carrick says the absence of Champions League football at Old Trafford will be difficult to swallow.

"It was always going to be tough tonight and we're not in the Champions League next season, not necessarily because of tonight, but because we have been weak and haven't been good enough over the season," he told Sky Sports.

"We need to finish the season as best we can and get ready for next season and come back believing we can win the title and qualify for the Champions League next season."

Best News: Atlético 1 Barcelona 0 Champions League

These really are the best days of their lives. Atlético Madrid are in the semi-final of the European Cup for the first time in 40 years and it is no fluke. How appropriate that the man who scored the goal that took Atlético to a 1-0 victory over Barcelona should be called Koke Resurrección. Atlético were Spain's losers, remember. They called them El Pupas, the jinxed ones. No more. A manager may never have had such an immediate and complete an impact on a club as Diego Simeone has at the Vicente Calderón.

Football's Robin Hood, as the midfielder Tiago called them, continue to rob from the rich. Here, they took from Barcelona, who will be absent from a Champions League semi-final for the first time in seven years. "We can envy the economic power of other teams, but when it comes to competitiveness we don't envy anyone," Simeone said. "Sometimes it's not the better team that wins but the team that's more convinced."

Atlético's conviction was complete. Victory, met with a roar that almost made your ears bleed, was entirely deserved; the only surprise was that Barcelona lasted as long as they did.

A goal down after five minutes, they were still a goal down after ninety. They had chances, sure, but not as many as their hosts who left the posts shuddering three times. Barcelona too will shudder when they look back on this.

"Win, win, win and win again," declared the mosaic stretched across one side of the stadium. The phrase honoured its author, Luis Aragonés, and so did supporters. Yet Atlético did not necessarily need to win. A 0-0 draw would take them through and that seemed plausible - four times these teams had met this season, four times they had drawn. All the more so as injured top scorer Diego Costa wasn't even on the bench, a fact that makes this feat all the more fantastic.

In his absence Atlético, who were also without Arda Turan, started with Adrián and David Villa. Adrián had scored just twice this season and had not even made the squad in five of the last six games. But his contribution was immense from the start. And far from seeking the draw, Atlético tore into the visitors.

It started with Raúl García shooting over. Then Adrián smashed a shot against the crossbar. The ball dropped to Villa whose cross reached Adrián and he found Koke free near the other post to score. The roar was deafening and the clock showed just five minutes.

It would be tempting to say that Barcelona were soon hanging on for dear life except they were barely hanging on at all.

They did not protect themselves, just hoped the storm would pass. They looked terrified and overrun, a team with virtually no defence and a goalkeeper who frightened them almost as much as the forwards running beyond them. "There was a very big difference between one team and the other in the first twenty minutes," Gerardo Martino, the Barcelona manager, admitted. "We couldn't put together four or five passes."

Atlético sensed the weakness and pushed Barcelona on to the ropes, pounding away. The amazing thing was that they did not land the knock out blow.

Villa shot over, Pinto was nearly caught by Adrián and twice more they hit the post inside 20 minutes. Both times it was Villa, from left then right.

The score may have been different but this was as much a hammering as last season's semi-final against Bayern Munich. At half time the fact that they were losing only 1-0 was the best thing Barcelona could say. There had been a lovely nutmeg from Neymar and a Messi header wide but survival was all they could have expected. More, in fact.

If Barcelona had been given a second chance, they appeared determined to take it but the sensation was a fleeting one. The second half started with Xavi and Messi combining to play in Neymar. Thibaut Courtois was quick and the loose ball dropped to Messi, who was suffocated by a pack of defenders. A moment later, Xavi scooped over five yards out. Xavi had the next chance, too, and it was a good one. But he headed Dani Alves's cross wide.

Martino took off Cesc Fabregas, who did not even wait to see the board before departing: he knew his number was up. But the better chances remained Atlético's, dashing forward when tiredness permitted and into the space Barcelona allowed them. Adrián left to a standing ovation and Diego came on, immediately drawing a near-post save from Pinto. The Barcelona goalkeeper made another stop from Gabi when Atlético broke through on the other side. And a minute later Howard Webb ignored Villa tumbling.

Neymar put a diving header wide from Alexis's cross, but this was desperate now. Barcelona lacked imagination, still less inspiration. Martino made the surprising admission that he wanted Messi to be involved less often but more decisively. He was neither. When the best opportunity fell in the final minute, it fell to Cristian Rodríguez, an Atlético substitute. Pinto saved the chance but no one saved Barcelona.

Atlético's incredible story continues.

Best News: A year after Jason Collins, Derrick Gordon breaks down more barriers

A year ago, almost to the day, Jason Collins sat in his living room in the hills above Los Angeles, absently palming a basketball as he told talked to two Sports Illustrated staffers. Collins was preparing to announce publicly that he was gay. He betrayed no nerves. There were no sighs of resignation. There were more laughs than tears.

But there was trepidation. Collins would be the first openly gay male athlete in a major U.S. team sport to come out. And, yes, that's a lot of qualifiers, but his act was still unprecedented. This was uncharted terrain, terra incognita. There was no template, no data points to help answer the questions. Would this announcement deprive Collins of a roster spot? How would teammates -- past, present, and potentially future -- respond? What sort of reaction would he generate when he ventured into arenas? "I guess we'll see," he said, again and again. "I guess we'll see."

DAVID GARDNER: Derrick Gordon comes out as thefirst openly gay men's D-I basketball player

Less than 12 months later, we've seen plenty. Collins' first-person story announcing that he was gay ran on this website at 11 a.m. on April 29. By lunchtime, he had heard from multiple U.S. presidents, dozens of colleagues, hundreds of athletes in the Republic of Sports, and countless strangers. A symphony of support overwhelmed a few dissonant strains of criticism. It was a big story for a few days. Then the public collectively wished him well and the news cycled elsewhere. The door was hardly blasted off its hinges, but it had been unlocked.

By February, it was pried open a bit more by Michael Sam, the Missouri football star. The reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Sam announced he was gay in advance of the NFL Draft. That, too, was unprecedented, and that, too, was a big story. Until a few days later, when our attention was diverted elsewhere.

Last week, the door opened further. UMass shooting guard Derrick Gordon entered a team meeting with his coach, Derek Kellogg. Surrounded by his teammates, he told them a secret that, it's believed, no other active male athlete in Division I college basketball, baseball or hockey had shared with a team. He was gay.

This morning ESPN and Outsports wrote about the account.

"I was thinking about summer plans and just being around my teammates and how it was going to be," Gordon told ESPN. "I just thought, 'Why not now? Why not do it in the offseason when it's the perfect time to let my teammates know and everybody know my sexuality.'"

One of the striking components of Michael Sam's story: for an entire season, his teammates were aware of his sexuality. They didn't gossip or run to social media. It didn't disrupt a team that went on to outperform all expectations. Sprawling research suggests that views on sexuality often break down by generation. To kids today, it's just not that big a deal.

In a different way, it seems this indifference manifested itself on the UMass team, too. A friend of Gordon's says he was teased teammates this season -- so much so that he nearly quit the team. But not because of his sexuality. Because of Gordon's dogged insistence, until last week, that he was straight. "If he had been out," says the friend, "[the teasing] wouldn't have happened."

It's too tidy, simply to say "we don't care anymore." On multiple networks, Gordon's name crawled across the bottom of TV. It was 7:00 a.m. in California and outsports.com was already having its biggest traffic since Michael Sam's announcement. We still care. And coming out still takes great rations of courage.

But Gordon's announcement is not as big a deal as Sam's, which wasn't as big a deal as Collins. The same way the Brittney Griner's announcement last year was not the cause celebre that Sheryl Swoopes' announcement was in 2005. The cycle perpetuates and, as we become increasingly comfortable. This is how progress rolls.

What's more, as athletes have come out, it's given rise to something resembling a club. The weekend before Sam out, he spent time in L.A. He went running with Collins. (Collins, say sources with first-hand knowledge, kicked his ass.) He had dinner with Billy Bean, the openly gay former Major Leaguer and Wade Davis, an openly gay former football player who now heads You Can Play. Chris Kluwe, the former Minnesota Viking, was there as a "straight ally." Same for Brendon Ayanbadejo. They all had the same essential message: if you're ready, do it.

Likewise, Gordon was in New York last weekend and met with a group that included Davis and Patrick Burke, the NHL scout and activist devoted to eradicating homophobia in sports. Another hoops guy was there, too, Anthony Nicodemo, an openly gay high school coach in New York. "Derrick saw how great it is to come out," says Cyd Zielger of Outsports, "and he saw how possible it is to come out."

Jason Collins wanted to be there and share the message. But he couldn't make it. He was in Miami and he had a game to play.

Best News: Rolling Stone's Julia Louis-Dreyfus cover features flawed US Constitution

Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone's Constitution cover is in need of an amendment.

The front page of the storied rock magazine's latest issue features a naked Julia Louis-Dreyfus with a faulty U.S. Constitution inked on her back.

Just above her derriere sits the signature of one of the nation's most prominent founding fathers, John Hancock.

There's only one problem, however: John Hancock didn't sign the U.S. Constitution.

Jim Cole/AP

Hancock, president of the Second Continental Congress, actually signed the Declaration of Independence.

His autograph on that document is so stylish and large, in fact, that it inspired the use of his full name as a synonym for the word "signature."

The error was first noticed by Rolling Stone readers on Twitter.

@OfficialJLD via Twitter

"Pro tip: John Hancock didn't sign the Constitution," one fan wrote.

"How did Rolling Stone make such a huge blunder?" another tweeted.

A representative for the magazine explained that the mishap was a result of not being able to fit the Declaration of Independence into the tattoo image.

"The Declaration of the Independence is on the other side but we couldn't fit in all the signatures," Wenner Media Publicity Director Melissa Bruno said about the issue, which hits newsstands April 11.

Louis-Dreyfus, on the other hand, acknowledged the magazine's error in comical stride.

"Hancock signed Dec. of Independence NOT Constitution. Yet another Mike f--k-up. Dummy," the "Veep" star tweeted, referencing her character's public relations flak on the show.

Louis-Dreyfus plays Vice President Selina Meyer on the hit HBO series.

Best News: Bayern Munich blow Manchester United away after Patrice Evra's strike

The most disappointing part for Manchester United is that, briefly, they had this game under their own control. They ought to be anguished by the speed at which everything unravelled and it will be almost 18 months, or possibly longer, before they get another chance to get it out of their system.

Bayern certainly showed their competitive courage once Patrice Evra had stunned everyone with a cannon of a shot, but there was still the unmistakable sense that United played a considerable part in their own downfall. This was not Bayern at their indomitable best, or even particularly close to it, but David Moyes's team crumpled in that last half an hour in a way that felt completely out of synch with everything that they had shown before the opening goal.

Bayern equalised in their next attack through Mario Mandzukic's header and United lost all their defensive poise in those moments, when Thomas Müller gave Pep Guardiola's side the lead and Arjen Robben eluded Evra and Nemanja Vidic to soothe any lingering nerves among the home crowd. Three goals had arrived in 17 minutes and, for United, it was made even more galling bearing in mind what had happened in the first two-thirds of the match.

It was probably just inevitable there would be long spells when United had to defend in numbers. Even the mosaics here are intimidating. "Kings of the Cup" was the message held up in thousands of pieces of red, purple and white behind one of the goals.

Yet it also quickly became apparent this was not going to be a night when Bayern simply swatted aside the Premier League's seventh-placed team. Arsène Wenger's view is that Bayern are not quite as brilliantly accomplished now as when Jupp Heynckes was in charge and, though that was dismissed at the time as sour grapes after Arsenal had been eliminated, maybe there is actually something in that.

Bayern may have won the Bundesliga in record-quick time this season but, for all their strengths, the old sheen of invincibility is not always so obvious these days when put in context with that stunning 7-0 aggregate win over Barcelona in last season's semi-finals.

At times, they were even bordering on the predictable, feeding the ball to Robben over and again, and relying on his ability to run at defenders, cutting in from the right.

There were plenty of occasions when Robben had his opponents on their heels but it was unusual in those moments to see Guardiola's team looking a little short of other ideas. Franck Ribéry was strangely subdued in the early parts when Moyes was certainly entitled to be encouraged about the way his players set about the game.

Whatever their problems this season, however many times they have strayed dangerously close to full-on crisis, United have actually put together a distinguished away record.

Their basic structure was good, with two midfielders in deep-lying positions and wingers who were willing to double up as full-backs, and the players in support of Wayne Rooney were quick to join him on the occasions when they did have the ball in promising areas.

Rooney, playing at the spearhead of their attack, was an elusive and difficult opponent for the two centre-halves, Dante and Jérôme Boateng, and they also had the ball in the net in the first half, only for a linesman's flag to deny Antonio Valencia the opening goal.

Bayern were missing Javi Martínez and Bastian Schweinsteiger among others but, then again, United had a considerable list of their own absentees. Moyes could be seen leaving his dugout at one point of the first half to remonstrate with Darren Fletcher for losing the ball in a dangerous position but that kind of carelessness was kept to a minimum. Or it was until they actually had the temerity to take the lead.

Until that point Vidic had played as though determined to remind everyone that he will be badly missed at Old Trafford next season. Chris Smalling had justified his selection ahead of Rio Ferdinand and, for the most part, Phil Jones had not allowed Ribéry to play with the usual menace.

Ribéry did, however, play a considerable part in the goal. It was his cross, from the left, that picked out Mandzukic and the Croat had a clear height advantage on Evra as he directed his header into the bottom corner.

Evra's goal was an absolute peach, struck first-time from fully 25 yards and still rising as it flew into the top left-hand corner of Manuel Neuer's net. Valencia's cross from the right had eluded everyone. It was an unstoppable finish and, at that stage, the small but boisterous group of away supporters could dare to imagine an improbable victory.

Unfortunately, at this level a team will always be punished for defending with such fragility. Müller got away from Vidic for the second Bayern goal, turning in Robben's cross from the right, and the Dutchman's solo run and finish ensured the home side could relax through the final exchanges.

They will go into a third successive semi-final while United are left to wonder when they will renew acquaintances with this competition.

Best News: Bayern Munich 3

Last updated at 22:03

Manchester United failed to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League as defending champions Bayern Munich came from behind to record a dominant win.

David Moyes's side had held Bayern to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the first leg and they stunned the hosts when Patrice Evra rifled in before the hour.

But Mario Mandzukic nodded in a swift equaliser before Thomas Muller's scuffed finish put Bayern ahead.

Arjen Robben then wrapped up the 4-2 aggregate win with a fine solo goal.

With United already out of the Premier League title race, FA Cup and League Cup, the Champions League had been Moyes's final chance to redeem what has been a hugely disappointing season for the 2012-13 league champions.

They had been given little chance against a Bayern side that has been imperious this season but United had produced a dogged defensive display at Old Trafford to give themselves hope heading into Wednesday's encounter.

United needed to score at Bayern to have a chance of progressing and, with that in mind, Moyes named an attacking line-up with Wayne Rooney, fit after recovering from a toe injury, leading the line in front of Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Antonio Valencia.

It almost paid dividends inside the first 10 minutes when a long ball over the top gave Rooney space to run at goal but the England striker hesitated on the edge of the area and his shot was blocked.

Valencia had an effort ruled out for offside soon after, before Bayern took control of the game. But for all their dominance in possession they did not force United goalkeeper David De Gea into a save in the first half.

Their short, sharp passing was creating opportunities but decision-making in the final third was letting them down, although Robben caused an all-too-brief moment of excitement just before half-time when he pounced on a loose ball and jinked his way into the area, only to see his shot deflected wide by Chris Smalling.

That pattern of play initially continued in the second half, but just as the hour mark approached the game finally exploded into life.

United stunned the home crowd when Valencia beat his man on the right to cross into the box where the ball was cleared only as far as Evra, who raced to the edge of the area and smashed a fine strike off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

The goal had Moyes and his coaching staff punching the air with delight, but the celebrations were all too brief as Bayern responded immediately.

From the kick-off, the ball found its way to Ribery on the left and Mandzukic stooped in front of Evra to head his low cross beyond De Gea.

Muller added a second goal a few minutes later and it galvanised Bayern, who set about harrying a rattled United defence, Evra earning a yellow card for bringing down Robben when he charged towards the area.

But Robben could not be stopped from putting the game beyond the visitors when, with defenders backing off, he ran across the edge of the area before slipping a low shot just inside the post.

United famously scored twice in injury time to overturn a one-goal deficit and beat Bayern in the 1999 Champions League final, but there was to be no repeat of such heroics in this game. The home side eased to victory without further alarm to join Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Real Madrid in Friday's semi-final draw.

Best News: Heartbleed, The First Security Bug With A Cool Logo

It's been fascinating to watch news of heartbleed, the massive OpenSSL exploit, spread on the web. After years of quietly putting us at risk, the general web user became aware of the exploit only a few days ago, and probably via heartbleed.com.

The site, which appeared almost overnight, was full of interesting info on the exploit, had a handsome minimalist design and included a nice logo. Someone had taken a bit of time to build an attractive and usable site.

But I was curious: how did heartbleed.com happen? When major exploits appear they are usually proliferated through wonky pages on security researcher sites. These "old-fashioned" exploit pages included a brief description, some references, and mention of the researchers involved. No images, just text.

But this exploit now had its own logo, its own website, and had taken on a life of its own. In short, Heartbleed was one of the first "branded" exploits, a computer bug that has been professionally packaged for easy mass consumption.

Not everyone was happy about this. One Twitter user writes:

☑ register heartbleed.com domain ☑ get custom graphic designed ☐ disclose to distros in advance ☑ disclose to public Priorities- (@keyist) April 08, 2014

While it's fun to think that someone is profiting from exposing this exploit, the facts are much more mundane. With a bit of not particularly difficult sleuthing, I found the registrar listing for the site. It belonged to a company in Finland, Codenomicon who registered it a mere four days ago, a day or so after the exploit became "popular."

The company was happy to answer questions about the site and stated emphatically that they were just trying to help the community.

"The content started as an internal Q&A which we wrote when trying to understand this bug and its impact," said Miia Vuontisjärvi of Codenomicon. "Within hours of discovery we contacted NCSC-FI to handle the vulnerability coordination. When we tried the attack against ourselves and saw the disclosure of secret keys we understood that the Internet community has a new kind of vulnerability remediation challenge to solve."

"Experiencing the pain of the bug first hand we got a nagging feeling that this calls for a 'Bugs 2.0′ approach in getting the message out in an emergency. Ossi, one of our experts came up with Heartbleed as an internal codeame and from there on thing lead to the other. The domain was available and our artist Leena Snidate did a an excellent job in putting our pain into the logo. It all went much faster than expected.

"When the vulnerability became public we realized that this is going to be a crisis communication. We said what we had to say in the Q&A with as little litter as possible. We put it available on a low latency and high bandwidth content delivery network so that it is very accessible for anyone in the need. Based on initial reactions we did some minor edits but we quickly saw the Internet community picked the issue up in an astonishing way."

The idea of a branded exploit - one that is carefully curated for easy consumption - is a new one. Historically obfuscation, either real or inadvertent, has been the watchword in computer security mostly because not everyone cared about major exploits. Heartbleed, in a way, was different. It was worldwide, very dangerous, and oddly photogenic. Whereas a Java exploit or Adobe Reader problem is "invisible" to the average user, the idea of a hacker watching your passwords scroll, Matrix-like without security systems setting off alarm bells is compelling and frightening. By creating a "bugs 2.0″ page for the exploit, Codenomicon inadvertently allowed the average user to understand and potentially react to the problem.

It worked.

"It is amazing to see such a community reaction to address this: internet wide scans, detection tools, pressure on passive service providers, top-notch reactions from progressive service providers (including re-keying and password changes), users advising each other and useful analysis by the media worldwide," said Vuontisjärvi. "All this is making security more democratic, this issue was too big for the security community to handle alone. Seeing almost one tweet per second at its peak on normal users reacting to this has been reassuring and is restoring our trust into the Internet."

Best News: Michigan State mourns loss of 8-year-old Lacey Holsworth

The Spartans forward has developed a relationship his No. 1 fan and 'little sister' that has cancer. This video is from March, 2013. VPC

The death of 8-year-old Lacey Holsworth, whose battle with cancer and friendship with Michigan State basketball became national stories, has inspired an outpouring of support and mourning today.

It inspired emotion from MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo, who said in a phone interview: "I'm supposed to be a guy who leads men, and now an 8-year-old has impacted my life like this. ... the impact on all of us will be lasting, and that's especially true for Adreian (Payne)."

It inspired ESPN analyst Dick Vitale to call Lacey's father, Matt Holsworth, and tell him he's going to donate $250,000 in her name, with fund raising starting now at dickvitaleonline.com.

"I can't believe it," Vitale said of Lacey's death in a phone interview before sobbing for several seconds. "This rips my heart out, man."

Lacey's family posted the following on Instagram around 3 a.m.: "Princess Lacey has achieved the ultimate victory. She now dances among angels.... The world is a better place because you were in it. Our hearts are broken. We love you Doll. Dance all night... Mommy and Daddy, Will, Mitchell and Luke #LoveLikeLacey"

Lacey, of St. Johns, became especially close with MSU senior forward Payne, starting more than two years ago when the team visited her at Lansing's Sparrow Hospital. A tumor had wrapped around her spine at the time, limiting her ability to walk. Treatments eventually removed the cancer from her body, but it returned in the fall and her condition worsened in recent weeks.

In that time, she accompanied Payne on his senior night at Breslin Center, helped cut down the nets after MSU won the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis, and made appearances on "The Today Show" and "Good Morning America." She was with Payne last week in Texas, cheering him on in a slam dunk contest.

Izzo said he talked to Payne around 7 this morning about Lacey's passing.

"Even though he knew this was inevitable, it's hard," Izzo said of Payne. "But he took it with the class and dignity that she taught him. I told him, 'Not everybody gets to touch somebody's life like you have. And sometimes other people impact your life, too.'"

Izzo also spoke on the phone with Vitale, who had Lacey and Payne as his guests at his annual Dick Vitale Gala to fight cancer last spring in Sarasota, Fla. Izzo said he was blown away by the emotion and determination from Vitale.

"His passion for this," Izzo said of Vitale and fighting cancer, "makes my passion for basketball look like an ant."

Many have expressed their support on Twitter, including ESPN analyst Jay Bilas, who posted: "RIP Lacey Holsworth. A beautiful soul, whose strength and courage touched and inspired us all. Heartbreaking."

Joe Rexrode also writes for the Detroit Free Press.

Best News: The Ultimate Warrior dead at 54

You could not find a scarier man in neon spandex.

Wrestling star the Ultimate Warrior has died at 54, according to a statement posted on the Web site of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). No cause of death was released.

The Ultimate Warrior might have been born James Hellwig, but he changed his name officially to Warrior in 1993. Heralded as the man who made personality a full-on requirement of wrestling showmanship, he was inducted into WWE's Hall of Fame over the weekend.

Warrior's death came as a shock - he'd appeared on "Monday Night Raw," WWE's weekly television show, days earlier. His Wrestlemania VI battle against archrival Hulk Hogan is remembered as one of the best in pro-wrestling history.

"No WWE talent becomes a legend on their own," Warrior said at "Monday Night Raw" after donning a mask that mimicked his iconic makeup. "Every man's heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others, it makes them bleed deeper and something larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized." He pointed to the audience. "You are the legend-makers of Ultimate Warrior."

There was wrestling before Warrior, and it went something like this: Get two huge guys who don't like each other - or, at least, pretend not to. Let them fight in a ring in front of a bunch of people. Televise it.

Warrior changed the game.

He sported a mop of wild, dirty-blond hair that - let's be honest - probably saw its fair share of Aqua Net. His face was always covered in warpaint that resembled Kiss makeup on steroids.

He scoffed at breaking kayfabe - character - and made it seem utterly unthinkable. Sort of like Stephen Colbert, but about 120 pounds bigger and with a penchant for butt-kicking.

He wasn't the first to develop and commit to a character - "Classy" Freddie Blassie and Hulk Hogan, among many others, did it too - but he turned it into an art form. For a generation of boys growing up in the 1990s, Warrior was was an icon of masculinity and a fan favorite.

He was a fully-realized, otherworldly character, complete with a mysterious backstory.

Warrior was always announced as hailing from "parts unknown." Unlike Hogan or later wrestlers such as Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, he wrestled under a pseudonym that didn't follow the normal first name-last name convention. Hellwig embodied Warrior so completely that he changed his legal name in 1993.

After he retired from wrestling in 1998, he parlayed his success as Warrior into a personal brand. He was a motivational speaker, sold workout tapes and wrote comic books about Warrior. As a precursor of the "attitude era" of professional wrestling, he carved a path for wrestlers such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who eventually transitioned to acting, and Chris Jericho, who became a musician.

Jericho was one of many in the wrestling community tweeting his grief at the news.

Devastated to hear of the passing of @UltimateWarrior. He was a childhood hero of mine & he vs @HulkHogan WM6 is still one of the best ever - Chris Jericho (@IAmJericho) April 9, 2014

Hogan tweeted:

RIP WARRIOR. only love. HH - Hulk Hogan (@HulkHogan) April 9, 2014

Warrior might have been fierce, but he wasn't a stranger to levity.

"I wish they could put the effin' 'F' back in for us guys that have a difficult time now keeping track of those kinds of details," he said to raucous cheering during his WWE Hall of Fame speech, lamenting the demise of the World Wrestling Federation, or WWF. (A legal dispute with the World Wildlife Fund forced the organization to change its name and the initials.) "I mean, I really can't believe that [ WWE attorney] Jerry McDevitt got his [butt] kicked by those Wildlife people."

Below, a collection of Warrior's entrances:

WWE's full statement, posted on their web site:

WWE is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of the most iconic WWE Superstars ever, The Ultimate Warrior. Warrior began his WWE career in 1987 and quickly went on to become one of the biggest stars in WWE history. Warrior became WWE Champion at WrestleMania VI, defeating Hulk Hogan in an epic encounter. We are grateful that just days ago, Warrior had the opportunity to take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame and was also able to appear at WrestleMania 30 and Monday Night Raw to address his legions of fans. WWE sends its sincere condolences to Warrior's family, friends and fans. Warrior was 54 and is survived by his wife Dana and his two daughters.

Best News: 5 defects lead Toyota to recall 6.4M vehicles

Toyota Motor Corp is recalling 6.39 million vehicles globally for faults affecting various parts ranging from steering to seats in the company's second-largest recall to date. Video provided by Reuters Newslook

TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 6.39 million vehicles worldwide -- about 2.34 million in the U.S. -- in actions for five different defects.

None of the various defects affecting 27 Toyota models and the Toyota-built Pontiac Vibe and Subaru Trezia in various markets is linked with crashes or deaths, the Associated Press reports, but Toyota is aware of two fires linked to a defective starter..

Some vehicles were recalled for more than one problem and the models' production spans April 2004 through August 2013.

Toyota models affected by one or more of the defects include: RAV4, Corolla, Matrix/ Vibe, Trezia/Viz, Yaris, Highlander, Tacoma and Hilux pickups, Reiz, Fortuner, Innova, Land Cruiser Prado and Camry nameplates. Vibe is a rebadged Toyota Matrix and the Trezia is a Toyota Viz.

Toyota said it was simply how the engineering probes evolved that resulted in the recalls coming together at the same time. The recalls follow Toyota's settling for $1.2 billion last month a U.S. criminal into concealing information from safety regulators about defects that led to its massive sudden acceleration recalls in 2009 and 2010 that were linked with five deaths.

After those recall, Toyota head Akio Toyoda vowed to reform the company's quality control and recall reporting processes.

The problems (with number of vehicles worldwide) that led to the latest batch of recalls, according to trade journal Automotive News from Tokyo: Cables for the driver air bag module that can be damaged, disabling the bag, though a warning light will come on (3.5 million vehicles, 1.67 million in the U.S.). Seats that don't lock in place (2.32 million, 670,000 in North America) Steering column brackets that may become loose or fail (760,000, Europe and Asia only) Windshield wiper motor (160,000, Asia only) Starter motor fire hazard (20,000, Asia only)

Best News: Heartbleed: What you should know

Experts have discovered a major flaw in the security software used by millions of Web sites - including banks, e-mail and social media services - that exposes users' names and passwords, the content of their communications, and their data to anyone who knows how to exploit the weakness. This does not mean your information has necessarily been stolen. It may mean that it's been vulnerable to theft and may remain vulnerable until a fix is applied.

It's as if your front door has a defective lock. Someone could get in as long as it's not fixed. But that does not mean they've already gained entry.

The bug affects software called OpenSSL, which operates on a huge percentage of servers that store data for the Internet and is meant to keep that data secure.

What can you do about it?

Not much. The problem is mostly on servers. A fix is available and being implemented by Web companies. Most experts are advising consumers not to rush out and change their passwords until the fix is complete. Here are some more critical questions and answers.

A: It stands for Secure Socket Layer. It is the technology for establishing an encrypted link between a Web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the Web server and browsers remain private. "Open" SSL simply means that the code is freely available.

It's the "s" in "https" that is supposed to stand for "secure." Unlike Web sites that begin with "http," "https" sites have a lock in browser address bars.

"That lock is supposed to signal that third parties won't be able to read any information you send or receive. Under the hood, SSL accomplishes that by transforming your data into a coded message that only the recipient knows how to decipher," explains Vox's Timothy Lee. "If a malicious party is listening to the conversation, it will only see a seemingly random string of characters, not the contents of your emails, Facebook posts, credit card numbers, or other private information." Q: Is there a fix?

A: Yes. It's being distributed and implemented, but the bug has been around a while, and nobody seems sure whether someone has already exploited it and, if so, how much damage has been done. Q: Should you change your passwords?

A: Don't rush to change your password.

"Security experts suggest waiting for confirmation of a fix," CNET warns, "because further activity on a vulnerable site could exacerbate the problem."

More than half a million Web sites are vulnerable by some estimates, or two-thirds of the Internet.

You can use this tool to see if a Web site is vulnerable. If it is, don't log in until the company confirms it has updated its SSL software and changed its security certificates. After that, you can change your password.

This list shows 1,000 Web sites that have been tested for Heartbleed. You can also use this tool to see if a site not listed is affected. The bug affects sites using the version 1.0.1 or 1.0.2-beta releases of OpenSSL, which comes with many versions of Linux. OpenSSL has released version 1.0.1g to fix the bug. Q: How did this happen?

A: "The vulnerability was introduced in 2011, apparently by accident when the open source code was updated, but the error was only spotted recently. That has raised fears that some attackers may already have been exploiting it to steal information," the Guardian reported. Q: What exactly is the problem?

A: It is "a weakness in one feature of the [OpenSSL] software - the so called 'heartbeat' extension, which allows services to keep a secure connection open over an extended period of time - allows hackers to read and capture data that is stored in the memory of the system," Gigaom explains.

There are many more explanations on the Internet. Try Gigaom. The Wire also has a good primer. Here are a few updates from major Web sites regarding the breach:

Tumblr says it has no evidence of any breach and took immediate action to fix the issue. However, the site suggests that users change their passwords.

Amazon has fixed the bug for most of its services. (Disclosure: Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.)

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, and had not posted warnings about the breach on their corporate sites.

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Yahoo told CNET: "As soon as we became aware of the issue, we began working to fix it. Our team has successfully made the appropriate corrections across the main Yahoo properties (Yahoo Homepage, Yahoo Search, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Food, Yahoo Tech, Flickr, and Tumblr) and we are working to implement the fix across the rest of our sites right now."

Google confirmed to Digg.com that it had applied the SSL update to its key services.

Ars Technica has a notice advising customers to change their account passwords.

Update from Etsy: "Yesterday evening (April 7, 2014), we patched the small part of our infrastructure that we had identified as being vulnerable. We also worked with our third party partners to ensure that their systems which we rely on were also protected. While we're not currently aware of any other ongoing site issues connected to Heartbleed, we continue to undergo additional checks to ensure the security of Etsy, as well as those of the partner services that we use."

Best News: Buzz That Was: On Cloud Nine

In case you were too busy wishing you had gone to UConn and missed out on actually watching the women's national championship game, we've got you covered. Here's everything you missed from the historic night. Cheers and tears

If things truly are always better in moderation, someone better not tell that to the UConn basketball programs or their fans. On Tuesday, just one day removed from the men's national championship win over Kentucky, the women rolled by Notre Dame to clinch their second straight NCAA title and record-setting ninth overall. Led by 21 points from Breanna Stewart -- the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player -- and a strong team defensive effort, the Huskies trounced the Irish 79-58 to complete their perfect season at 40-0 and end the painstaking 24-hour title drought in Storrs.

The win for both basketball programs marks just the second time in Division I history the feat has been achieved, joining the 2004 Husky squads in the record books.

Tonight we WILL party like it's 2004! #CollegeBasketballCapital #UConn #BleedBlue #caNINEs - UConn Huskies (@UConnHuskies) April 9, 2014

Coach Geno Auriemma, often known for his sarcasm and brash sense of humor, was clearly overcome with emotion after the victory. So much so, he cried during his postgame interview with ESPN's Holly Rowe. Yes, you read that correctly.

Even Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw can't hate on that. On second thought, she probably can. But likely won't do it in public. Paging Mr. President

Just how exactly does one celebrate her second straight national title? While some cry and others just do ta festive Nae Nae, Stefanie Dolson took the moment to hilariously remind President Barack Obama that the team would be visiting again.

Hope he's been practicing his dance moves. She went on to ask Jimmy Fallon to call her. DO IT, FALLON! Capping the celebration

Thousands of UConn students watched the game from Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, but two of those students stood out a little more than the rest. Perhaps it was their brand-new "national champions" hats that gave them away.

The game became so lopsided in the second half that even Notre Dame's most loyal of fans looked as if they had seen enough. Skylar Diggins' facial expression pretty much said it all. As just about everyone immediately pointed out on Twitter.

Skylar Diggins fed up at the score tonight. UCONN takes it. http://ift.tt/1i1ig5Q - Steve Noah (@Steve_OS) April 9, 2014 Ray Allen multitasking

UConn legend and Miami Heat star Ray Allen was in, ahem, "North Texas" on Monday night to watch his beloved former team win the national title, but he was unable to go to Nashville on Tuesday due to some NBA game he was contractually obligated to participate in. But he didn't let playing against the Brooklyn Nets stop him from following along with the NCAA title game.

Ray Allen just stopped by press row during a timeout and asked, "What's the UConn women's score?" - Joseph Goodman (@JoeGoodmanJr) April 9, 2014

The Heat lost by one point after LeBron James' dunk was denied in the final seconds, so hopefully someone cheered Allen up with the news of UConn's win immediately after the game. With his alma mater winning two national titles in 24 hours, I think he's probably doing just fine right about now. Sign of the times in Storrs

After the destruction of the UConn campus in Storrs on Monday after the men's triumphant win, it remained to be seen if there would be anything left for the students to destroy during the Tuesday night celebration. But alas, that's why these resourceful students got accepted into an institution of higher learning. Determined to wreak even more havoc, the students flocked to the streets for the second straight night. You know, because turn down for what and all.

Students alter Wilson Hall, now Willie Nelson Hall! http://ift.tt/1n3Dmkx - The Daily Campus (@The_DailyCampus) April 9, 2014

I mean, can you really blame the students? After all the spots secured in the record books by the basketball teams, clearly they just wanted to cement the record for "most arrests on campus in a two-day span." Still awaiting official confirmation from the Guinness Book folks. See something worthy of inclusion on social media or just want to comment on one of today's stories? Best News: The 'Heartbleed' security flaw that affects most of the Internet

(CNN) -- A major online security vulnerability dubbed "Heartbleed" could put your personal information at risk, including passwords, credit card information and e-mails.

Heartbleed is a flaw in OpenSSL, an open-source encryption technology that is used by an estimated two-thirds of Web servers. It is behind many HTTPS sites that collect personal or financial information. These sites are typically indicated by a lock icon in the browser to let site visitors know the information they're sending online is hidden from prying eyes.

Cybercriminals could exploit the bug to access visitors' personal data as well as a site's cryptographic keys, which can be used to impersonate that site and collect even more information.

It was discovered by a Google researcher and an independent Finnish security firm called Codenomicon. The researchers have put up a dedicated site to answer common questions about the bug. They even gave it an adorably gruesome custom icon.

Heartbleed is the result of a small coding error but it could have far-reaching consequences and affect the majority of Internet users.

Researchers discovered the issue last week and published their findings on Monday, but said the problem has been present for more than two years, since March 2012. Any communications that took place over SSL in the past two years could have been subject to malicious eavesdropping.

What makes the bug particularly problematic is that there is no simple fix. Action needs to be taken by both the compromised sites and individuals who have visited them.

To protect their user data and encryption keys, sites must upgrade to the patched version of OpenSSL, revoke compromised SSL certificates and get new ones issued.

Many major websites including Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Amazon have said they've taken steps to secure their sites. Security researchers demonstrated the flaw by stealing Yahoo e-mail logins on Tuesday morning, but Yahoo has since fixed the issue across its major sites, including Tumblr.

It's not just an issue for major sites. Smaller online stores and services use OpenSSL, and those sites might take longer to make the necessary fixes. Websites don't typically publicize whether they're using OpenSSL, so the process will also be bumpy for consumers.

Individuals should update their passwords across the various Web pages they use, but only once they have confirmed a site has already taken the proper measures to address Heartbleed. If they don't and that site is still at risk, the new password could also be compromised. Many sites will also likely send e-mails instructing customers to update passwords if necessary.

Best News: Kim Kardashian Busted For Pulling Images Off Google And Posting Them As Her ...

http://ift.tt/1koWBru Kardashian and her famous family vacationed in Thailand last week, posting tons of photos and videos documenting their luxurious travels.

But Kim's epic elephant selfie fail wasn't her only photo blunder of the trip. It turns out that in addition to the reality star's sexy videos and pics with her sisters, she has also been taking scenic photographs of Thailand straight off Google images and passing them off as her own.

Kardashian posted the below photo last week with the caption, "Thank you for the beautiful memories Thailand." It currently has nearly 600,000 "likes."

But fans quickly noticed that the image was a popular one pulled from Google. It's among the first that show up when you search "Thailand Beach."

Google Images

Kardashian didn't even scroll past the first row before choosing an image to take as her own.

While a Google search for "Thailand Cherry Blossoms" doesn't immediately reveal the below image, we have our doubts about Kim's latest Instagram post, too.

http://ift.tt/SkBE0P

Chris Sprigman, a law professor at University of Virgina who specializes in intellectual property law, tells Business Insider that Kardashian should probably be more careful next time she blindly grabs an image online.

While Sprigman says, "Looking at the website where she got the image, it's impossible to tell if there's a claim of copyright in the image and whether she's authorized to download it," he further explains, "There's a lot of stuff available on the web that's copyrighted and you just can't assume that because an image is on the web that it's free for you to use."

Best News: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's Wedding Plans Not on Hold

Splash News

There's no hiccup in Kim Kardashian and 's wedding plans.

Despite reports claiming the couple's forthcoming nuptials have come to a "halt," a Kardashian source tells E! News there's no truth to the latest round of Kimye rumors, adding that the reports are "completely false."

Radar Online first reported that the lovebird's marriage plan is in "crisis," due to fact that French law requires a 40-day residency prior to any wedding.

But fans of the couple can rest assured as the couple is continuing to plan their Parisian I-do's, although they will have to take the French law into account if they plan on obtaining a marriage license overseas. VIDEO: Check out Kim's OMG-worthy bikini pics

According to the French Embassy, "All marriages must be performed by a French civil authority before any religious ceremony takes place. The mayor can authorize the deputy mayor or a city councilor to perform the ceremony in the town in which one of the parties to be married has resided for at least 40 days preceding the marriage. These requirements can not be waived."

Kim most recently told Ryan Seacrest that she and Yeezy are planning a "super, super-small intimate" wedding. "As we are going along, we realize we want it to be smaller and more intimate than people are imagining and thinking," the brunette beauty said. PHOTOS: Kim and Kanye's magical engagement

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star also said that she and the 36-year-old rapper, who have yet to set an official date, are both involved in the preparations for the big day. "There's certain things I'm like, 'I know you're going to hate the seating chart, so I'll take care of this,'" she revealed, "and then there's some things that are really important to him. [But] the seating chart is like death."

The mother of one most recently made headlines following her super-sexy bikini photo shoot in Thailand, during which she put her famous booty on full display.

Meanwhile, 'Ye's been busy bragging about his soon-to-be wife on Future's new track titled, "I Won," in which both men boast about their lady loves. PHOTOS: Keeping Up With Kimye RELATED VIDEOS:

Best News: UConn Wins Women's NCAA Title

NASHVILLE - At the final buzzer, his record ninth N.C.A.A. title secured, Geno Auriemma earned the right Tuesday to climb a ladder and snip a bit of the net, to stand above everyone in women's basketball.

As Connecticut defeated its fiercest rival, Notre Dame, 79-58, Auriemma and the Huskies (40-0) completed their fifth undefeated season. He now has one title more than his former nemesis, Pat Summitt and Tennessee, and only one fewer than John Wooden, whose pyramid of success brought 10 national titles to the men's team at U.C.L.A.

A school whose early mission was agriculture, UConn has come to regularly harvest basketball championships. The women's team again shares a national title with the men, as it did in 2004. Since 1999, the Huskies men and women have made a combined 17 appearances at the Final Four. Duke is next with eight.

For a night, at least, no one worried that the Huskies would have to join a more substantive football league than the fledgling American Athletic Conference to continue to succeed in basketball.

"We're in a league of our own," Auriemma said earlier in the tournament.

In the first matchup between undefeated teams in the women's title game, UConn pitilessly exploited the absence of Notre Dame's 6-foot-3 post player, Natalie Achonwa, who tore a knee ligament in a regional final.

The Irish (37-1) had no answer for the height and interior skill of UConn's 6-4 Breanna Stewart, the national player of the year, or 6-5 center Stefanie Dolson. Stewart finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists, while Dolson contributed 17 points and 16 rebounds and 7 assists. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 18 points and 7 rebounds.

UConn took an early 22-8 lead with a 16-0 run, every point coming inside. The Huskies scored 52 points in the lane to 22 for Notre Dame.

While Auriemma can be blunt and polarizing - a columnist at The Tennessean suggested he was the "arrogant, egomaniacal, unbeatable coach everybody in women's basketball hates" - his teams are built on a model of assured calm and selfless discipline.

And while Auriemma tends to draw the spotlight, his coaching model is built on the collective, not the individual.

The Huskies won Tuesday as they have won since their first title in 1995. With an attacking offense built on spacing, movement, screens and crisp passing. And a defense that changed shapes but never its intent to hound and confuse and disrupt. Most impressively, the Huskies bewilder while seldom committing fouls. On both ends of the court, they are relentless.

If victory for UConn has stirred both appreciation and resentment from others, so be it, Dolson said. Her team possessed a certain confidence, she said, "That we know no one wants to see us win, so we're going to win anyway."

Jeff Judkins, the women's coach at Brigham Young, and a former men's assistant at Utah, noted that he had coached against Bobby Knight, Rick Pitino and John Calipari and that Auriemma deserved the comparison. The truest association might be to Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, who like Auriemma, has filigreed his UConn abundance with Olympic gold.

"These coaches in the women's game are good," Judkins said. "I'd put them up against anybody. Geno, in my book, is one of the best coaches ever, when you dominate a sport like he has."

Why, Auriemma, 60, has been asked repeatedly, has he never left to coach a men's team. For starters, he makes about $2 million a year at UConn. And he regularly recruits some of the country's best players.

"It's like we were going for a race and you're driving a Porsche and I'm driving a truck," Judkins said. "You've got a better chance of winning."

Women stay in school for four years instead of departing after one, like many men's players. And after overseeing his son's A.A.U. team, Auriemma decided that women were more coachable than men.

"A lot of things have happened to make me think I've got a pretty good job where I am," he said.

Many celebrate the 2002 championship team of Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash as be the greatest in women's basketball. Others prefer Maya Moore's teams that built a 90-game winning streak to the current UConn team, which lacked depth. But Gary Blair, who coached Texas A&M to the 2011 national title, considers this to be Auriemma's best starting five.

His reasons: Stewart is the most versatile player in the country. Dolson is as resourceful as Tina Charles was. Point guard Moriah Jefferson willingly restricts her focus to assists and steals. Shooting guard Bria Hartley has a flair for the timely basket.

And, of the feathery 3-pointers of Mosqueda-Lewis, Blair said, "Who's a better shooter that they've ever had? If you want to play a game of H-O-R-S-E, I'm taking Lewis over any of his great ones."

When Mosqueda-Lewis missed eight games during the season with an elbow injury and mononucleosis, Auriemma told her: "Don't feel sorry for yourself. Nobody else is going to feel sorry for you."

This directness can be traced, in part, to two sources. First, Auriemma grew up outside Philadelphia, where what is pronounced as "attytude" is a fine and necessary art. When it comes to sports, the verbal jab, the needling and busting chops, the attempt to get under an opponent's skin, is generally prized more highly than milquetoast passivity.

Second, Auriemma said, his parents, who immigrated from Italy when he was 7, trusted coddling less than they trusted banks. He described the family approach as: "I'm not worried about your feelings. I'm just going to tell you the truth. What are you going to do, run away from home?"

In demanding greatness, he views himself as a kind of personal trainer, pushing his players beyond the limits they set for themselves. It was disrespectful, Auriemma said, to treat his team as female basketball players instead of simply as basketball players.

Nora Lynn Finch, the associate commissioner for women's basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference, said, "I think there are not enough coaches who set the standard and will not lower the bar."

Summitt set the same uncompromising standard at Tennessee. And while she and Auriemma feuded, and she eventually stopped scheduling UConn over concerns about the recruiting of Moore, Summitt also kept her sense of humor. When two goldfish in her office fish tank tried to devour each other, she named them Pat and Geno.

Now that Summitt's career has been ended by early-onset Alzheimer's, respect and sadness and belated friendship have superseded bickering. Auriemma said he would take no added pleasure in winning a ninth championship in the state where Summitt built her dynasty.

"At some point," he said, "you just stop and go, O.K., what's the point?"

Similarly, he demurred when asked about comparisons to Wooden.

What he was most proud of, said Auriemma, who came to UConn in 1985, was the sustained excellence of his teams. Any coach could appreciate that, no matter what team, what gender.

"Every coach," he said, "wants their legacy to be, I was really good at what I did for a really long time."
